Senior Scientist (all genders) - Biophysics and Analytics
In your role as a Senior Scientist (m/f/d) - Biophysics and Analytics y ou combine deep expertise in protein biophysics with a hands-on, drug-hunting mindset and the ability to generate high-impact experimental insights for discovery programs. You drive high-quality data generation at the bench while supporting scientific project delivery across modalities (small molecules, biologics, glue degraders, PROTACs, siRNA). Apply now to help advance our portfolio decisions with rigorous biophysical and analytical evidence.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Design, execute, and troubleshoot biochemical and biophysical assays to characterize proteins, with a strong focus on interaction analysis, quality control, and mechanism-of-action studies
Design and execute protein mass spectrometry workflows (intact mass analysis, peptide mapping, characterization of post-translational modifications and sequence variants) and integrate the data into project decisions
Plan, run, and analyze label-free binding experiments on SPR platforms (e.g., Biacore, Carterra), including kinetic, affinity, and epitope-binning/competition studies
Develop and validate fit-for-purpose biochemical and biophysical assays to support screening, hit validation, and lead optimization
Interpret complex datasets, present results and recommendations, and partner closely with discovery colleagues to embed biophysical insights into decision-making
Contribute to lab organization, platform ownership and maintenance (including MS and SPR), and continuous workflow improvements, including automation and high-throughput opportunities
Collaborate with highly skilled research associates and scientists across levels and interface with cross-functional teams (e.g., structural biology, protein engineering, chemical biology, in vitro assays)
Contribute to the digital agenda by optimizing workflows and generating/analyzing data to enable in silico experimentation and machine learning
take accountability in cross-functional teams across the discovery value chain in line with timelines and budget
WHO YOU ARE
Hold a PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology, or a related discipline, ideally complemented by relevant industry experience (biotech/pharma, CRO, or academic collaboration)
Bring hands-on experience in protein mass spectrometry (e.g., intact mass, peptide mapping, PTM profiling) and familiarity with relevant data-analysis software
Stand out with demonstrated hands-on experience in biophysical methods for biomolecular interactions, especially SPR; experience with MST, ITC, DSF, or BLI is a strong plus
Have a solid foundation in protein biochemistry, including purification and quantitative analysis of recombinant proteins and approaches to understand protein structure, properties, and function
Demonstrate strong data analysis capabilities and the ability to translate experimental results into clear, project-relevant conclusions
Bring exposure to high-throughput and/or automated workflows for biophysical, biochemical, and MS-based assays
Have exposure to biologics or protein-based therapeutics (e.g., antibodies, Fc-fusion proteins) and feel confident working in a modality-agnostic discovery environment; deep biologics discovery experience is a plus
Combine excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills with high learning agility and strong self-organization
Fluent in English, both written and spoken, with strong communication and presentation skills; German language skills are a plus

How this role compares
Computed from every other active Drug Discovery & Preclinical Research role in our database, not just this employer's listings.
We currently track 188 comparable Senior Drug Discovery & Preclinical Research roles across 30 biopharma companies.
Salary context
62 of 188 peers report a salary range (USD, annualized)
Peers share this role's job function and a matching or adjacent seniority level -- not necessarily the same therapeutic area or country.

Seniority mix
188 of 188 peers have a known seniority level
Therapeutic area mix
29 of 188 peers have a known therapeutic area; the rest are genuinely unlabeled, not hidden
Similar opportunities
The closest matches from our peer group, ranked by how similar they are, not how well you'd qualify for them -- treat this as market context, not a guaranteed shortlist; a weak match is labeled as one below.
How we calculate "similar"
No black box, no LLM guesswork: a deterministic score built from four normalized attributes. Here's this role's own peer group at different match levels, so you can see the mechanism, not just the result.
Every comparison starts from the same 100-point budget: 25 for working in the same function, 40 for the same therapeutic area, 20 for the same or adjacent seniority, 15 for the same country. A dimension we can't confirm on both sides contributes nothing, never a guess, never a free pass.
0 points, never a partial guess. A role we know almost nothing about beyond its function bottoms out at 25%; it never inflates to 100% just because there's little to compare against. Seniority uses a defined ladder (Associate → Manager → Associate Director → Senior → Principal → Director → Senior Director → Executive/VP) so "Director" and "Senior Director" count as adjacent, but "Director" and "Executive/VP" do not.
