Senior Director, Bone Field Medical Affairs (MSL) Lead

The Senior Director, Bone Field Medical Affairs Lead is responsible for setting and executing the U.S. field medical vision and strategy for the Bone therapeutic area. As a member of the Bone Medical Affairs Leadership Team, this individual serves as a strategic partner across Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Medical Value & Population Health, Commercial, and Global Medical organizations to maximize patient impact and advance Amgen's Bone portfolio.

This leader oversees a national team of Medical Science Liaisons(MSLs), drives field medical excellence, shapes evidence-generation priorities through external insights, and influences franchise-level decision-making. The role requires strong enterprise leadership, organizational influence, and the ability to translate emerging scientific and healthcare ecosystem trends into actionable business and medical strategies.

Key Responsibilities

Franchise and Enterprise Leadership

Develop and execute the U.S. Bone Field Medical strategy aligned with key brand and medical objectives and long-term portfolio priorities.

Serve as a senior strategic advisor to Therapeutic Area Heads and Medical Affairs leadership regarding scientific trends, stakeholder needs, and evolving healthcare dynamics.

Drive cross-functional alignment on key strategic initiatives, including launch readiness, lifecycle management, evidence generation, and patient-centered innovation.

Influence franchise decisions through high-quality external insights and field intelligence.

Leadership of Field Medical Organization

Lead and develop a national Bone MSL organization, including direct leadership of MSL managers and/or regional directors.

Build organizational capabilities that support current and future portfolio needs.

Establish performance standards, talent strategies, succession planning, and leadership development initiatives.

Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration, and inclusion.

External Scientific Leadership

Cultivate strategic relationships with nationally recognized thought leaders, professional societies, healthcare systems, and academic institutions.

Represent Amgen at major scientific congresses and key external engagements.

Ensure the field team effectively communicates complex scientific data and supports high-quality scientific exchange.

Guide stakeholder engagement strategies addressing clinical, payer, health-system, and policy considerations.

Cross-Functional Influence

Serve as a trusted strategic partner across Medical Affairs, Commercial, Market Access, Value & Access, Regulatory, and Global teams.

Provide leadership during major business milestones including launches, label expansions, and competitive response planning.

Drive alignment between U.S. and Global Medical Affairs priorities when appropriate.

Operational Excellence and Governance

Champion field medical excellence initiatives, including capability building, analytics, insight management, and stakeholder engagement effectiveness.

Ensure all activities comply with Amgen policies, industry regulations, and ethical standards.

Lead resource planning, organizational design, and budget management for the Bone Field Medical organization.

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate degree & 4 years of Medical Affairs experience​

OR​

Master’s degree & 8 years of Medical Affairs experience​

OR​

Bachelor’s degree & 10 years of Medical Affairs experience​

AND​

4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree (MD, PharmD, PhD, DNP, or equivalent).

At least 8 years of experience in Medical Affairs, clinical research, or basic science research focused on Bone or Related Disease area

Clinical and deep disease knowledge base in osteoporosis and/or related disease area

Significant Medical Affairs and field medical leadership experience.

Demonstrated success leading leaders and large, geographically dispersed MSL teams.

Deep expertise in Bone, Osteoporosis, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, or related therapeutic areas.

Proven ability to influence senior executives and drive enterprise-level initiatives

Management and leadership experience, including direct and non-direct report responsibilities in complex cross-functional settings

Leadership Competencies

Strong executive presence and communication skills.

Talent development and succession planning expertise.

Track record of organizational transformation and change leadership.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
