This position can be filled either as Clinical Data Engineer or Senior Clinical Data Engineer.

This position has a hybrid setup with approximately 1-2 days per week on site.

This position is part time eligible with 80%.

Tasks & responsibilities

In your new role, you will support clinical studies and data-driven initiatives by enabling high-quality clinical trial data throughout the study lifecycle, working as part of a globally integrated team across therapeutic areas.

You will perform and coordinate data management activities for early-phase clinical trials, supporting data collection, review, reconciliation, and delivery while creating, maintaining, and overseeing key study documentation, including Data Management Plans (DMPs), Data Review Plans (DRPs), and data transfer specifications.

You will review clinical trial protocols to identify data requirements and translate scientific and operational needs into technical specifications, including eCRF design, edit check development, database configuration, and user acceptance testing (UAT).

Leveraging your technical expertise, you will integrate, review, and reconcile internal and external clinical data sources, ensuring efficient, scalable, and end-to-end data workflows across systems and vendors while applying established data standards and processes, including CDISC principles and SDTM requirements where applicable.

You will ensure compliance with ICH-GCP guidelines, regulatory requirements, industry standards, and best practices while enabling high-quality end-to-end clinical data flows across systems, vendors, and downstream analytical environments. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional stakeholders to support successful study execution and continuously expand your clinical, technical, and process expertise while contributing to a culture of learning, innovation, and operational excellence.

Additional tasks for the Senior role

As a Senior Clinical Data Engineer, you will take ownership of complex, critical, and strategically important clinical data management activities and data setups across studies.

You will design, implement, and continuously improve scalable and robust end-to-end data flows, integrations, and pipelines across clinical data systems, including EDC platforms, external vendor data sources, and downstream analytical environments.

You will ensure data are fit for analysis and reporting by leading end-to-end data engineering activities and proactively driving data quality, consistency, traceability, and risk mitigation throughout the clinical data lifecycle.

You will drive automation, standardization, and reuse of technical solutions, processes, and specifications across studies to increase efficiency, quality, and sustainability.

You will act as a subject matter expert and key contact for cross-functional teams and external partners, providing guidance and sharing best practices. In addition, you will identify opportunities for innovation and process improvement, contribute to the evolution of Clinical Data Engineering capabilities, tools, and ways of working, and coach and support less experienced colleagues to foster knowledge sharing, collaboration, and technical excellence across the organization.

Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree (e.g. BSc, MSc, MBA) in Data Science, Computer Science, Life Sciences, Software Engineering, Medical Informatics, or a related field, combined with several years of relevant experience in data management, data engineering, data processing, databases, or analytical environments.

Technical background (e.g. medical informatics, computer science, programming, or data engineering) and a strong interest in clinical data and clinical development.

Foundational understanding of clinical data acquisition, external data integration, and data standards (e.g. CDISC/SDTM), as well as knowledge of data quality principles and familiarity with data quality frameworks.

Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset with a pragmatic and solution-oriented approach.

Team player with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary, global, and remote teams.

Fluency in written and spoken English; German is an advantage.

Additional requirements for the Senior role

Several years of experience in Clinical Data Engineering, Clinical Data Management, technical data management, or a comparable role, including proven experience driving automation, standardization, and continuous process improvement initiatives. Experience leading projects, workstreams, or matrix teams is an advantage.

Strong technical background (e.g. Medical Informatics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Programming, or Data Engineering) combined with advanced expertise in clinical data and clinical development. This includes significant experience with EDC systems, external data acquisition and integration, clinical data standards (e.g. CDISC/SDTM), data quality frameworks, and end-to-end clinical trial data flows across systems, vendors, and downstream analytical environments.

Strong stakeholder communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across functions, organizations, and global teams, including in complex and time-critical situations.

Demonstrated decision-making and prioritization skills, with the ability to balance pragmatism, efficiency, quality, and regulatory compliance.

Proven ability to identify technical risks, develop sustainable solutions, and drive implementation in collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders.
